American Expansion - Should Mexico join the United States?

Should Mexico join the United States? Yes, I am suggesting that the United States of America should annex the Mexico. The reasons they may consider doing this would be economic, environmental, and social. Before you walk away from this article read the pros and cons, if nothing else you may learn a little more about the correlations between the government and people of both great nations.

Political Structure

The United States and Mexican governments have much in common.  Both the UntiedStates and Mexico have governments that are considered federal republics with democratic policies.  This means that both countries are federations of independent states that have a leader who is influenced by the people as opposed to a monarchy.  They have democratic policies because the people hold elections to choose most of their leaders.

Both countries have an executive, legislative and judicial branch of their federal government.  The head of the executive branch is an elected president who serves a predetermined term.  In the United States it is four years and in Mexico it is six years.  Both legislative branches of government have an elected senate, but in the United States all senators are elected and in Mexico 75% are elected and 25% are appointed according to popular vote.  The United States also has an elected House of Representatives where Mexico has a Chamber of Deputies with 60% of them being elected and 40% being assigned by popular vote.  Both have Supreme Courts whose justices are selected by the president with approval of the senate.

Both countries also gained their independence from European nations who attempted to govern them from across the Atlantic.  Both declared independence and then fought a bloody war with their oppressors to gain the freedom they rightly deserved.  They then forged constitutions to govern their great nations.

The People

Population

Mexico: 112,468,855

United States: 310,232,863

Age 0-14

Mexico: 32 million

United States: 62 million

Age 15-64

Mexico: 73 million

United States: 208 Million

Age 65 up

Mexico: 7 Million

United States: 40 Million

Birth rate

Mexico: 2.31 children per woman

United States: 2.06 children per woman

The benefits that can be deduced from these statistics are as follow: the United States would instantly increase in size by almost 30%; the available work force would increase by 35% instantly and 50% over the next eighteen years as the children grow up; the available work force and population would most likely continue to grow faster due higher rate of child bearing in Mexican women (.25% higher).  Because the workers would increase by 35% so would the amount of people paying taxes and into social security.  But there are only 7 million Mexicans over the age of 65 compared to 40 million in the united states, so social security payouts would only increase by about 18%, meaning more money would be gained for social security than would be lost.

Education

The education system in Mexico is not as strong as in the United States.  Mexico's literacy is only 91% compared to 99% in the United States.  Also the average Mexican student only attends 13 years of school while the average American attends 16 years.  Although I see this as a con over all it leaves room for improvement, which is always good.  Those who are less educated will be more apt to work in an industrial environment where positions are hard to fill in times of good economic growth (which hopefully we will be entering soon).  Also there is an opportunity to give the Mexican children a better education in the future, thus helping pull the entire world ahead another notch.

Crime

There is a higher level of crime and gang violence in Mexico that we must address.  The higher levels of crime that are reported in Mexico are at least partially due to the lower standards of education.  There is a proven correlation between low education and criminal activity; so by improving education we will lower the crime rate.  Another reason for the crime is corrupt local governments who are in league with drug cartels.  Mexico does not have the military might to deal with these cartels but it would be easy for American forces to weed them out with the help of the good citizens.

Terrorism and Borders

The terrorist threat the current instability of the Mexican border poses to us would also be greatly reduced.  For one the boarder would move south and our primary concerns would be keeping Guatemalans and other Central American Countries form entering illegally.  This would be easier to achieve because the land border would be 60% smaller than the current Mexican/Untied States border.  It would be easier to put a troop presence around the new border. (Maybe we will discuss annexing down to Panama another time.)

Military

From a Military stand point our potential troop base would increase by 50% with all the Mexicans who are eligible to serve in the military.  Mexico's current military spending is only .05% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) compared to 4.06% in the United States.  I believe it is important to mention here, for those who do not know, there are many Mexican citizens currently serving honorably in the United States military (no you have never been required to be a citizen to serve in our armed forces.)

Geography

From a geological stand point a union between the two countries would increase the size of the United States land mass by 20% making it the second largest country on earth.  The coast line of the United States would double increasing both our fishing industry and potential tourism capital.  Mexico has 12.66% arable land (land that can be farmed) giving them 95 thousand square miles (246k sq km) of farmable land compared to 637 thousand square miles ( 1,650k sq km) in the Untied States, and increase of 15% in potential farmland.   Mexico currently has 9,607 sq miles (24,882 sq km) of permanent crops compared to 7,429 sq miles (19,240 sq km) currently in the United States.  This would increase the yearly crop yield by 120%.  Mexico also has the natural recourses: petroleum, silver, copper, gold, lead, zinc, natural gas and timber.

Economy

Mexico's Gross Domestic Product (GDP its purchasing power parity if you will) is 1.482 trillion compared to 14.26 trillion in the United States.  This would increase the United States GDP to 15.742 trillion putting them back on top of the GDP leader board over the European Union.

Mexico produces more oil than it consumes.  Taking that into account the United States could decrease their imported oil needs by 10% thus driving down fuel cost and stimulating economic growth.  Mexico's 10 billion barrel oil reserve would bring the United States oil reserves from 20 billion to 30 billion; a significant increase to our resources and national security.

Mexico's external debt is 177 billion compared to 13,450 billion in the United States.  So as the united States increase their work force by 35% they will only increase their debt to the world by 1.3%.  This would be considered a decent acquisition by most business persons.

More Cons

There are other issues that would come with annexing Mexico that I did not mention above. From an environmental standpoint Mexico has pore hazardous waste disposal facilities, their fresh water is scarce in the northern states and they have poor sewage in their urban areas. In fact their lack of clean water and issues with deforestations are considered a national security issue. The Mexican telecommunication and transportation grid is also week in comparison with the United States. Their entire info structure needs much improvement.

Another issue is that while Mexico's GDP is only 10% of the United States their population is nearly 35%. This means that the overall poverty rate would increase, at least on paper, after the acquisition.

Final Thoughts

Now you have read some information on the pros and cons of annexing Mexico into the Untied States.  I want you to bear in mind that although I think this would be a good idea I am trying to convey a non biased, factual, informative hub here.  I am by no means a political science expert or economic genius so I am sure there are things I overlooked on both sides of the argument.  On thing I have not mentioned until now is that Mexico would probably need to be annexed as individual states as opposed to one large country state.  How this would be done would depend greatly on the will of the people form both sides of the boarder.  I know Mexico currently has 31 states and one federal district.  If it was annexed as 31 states it would instantly have 62 senators and house reps equal to its population.  This would greatly influence the political structure of the United States.  On the other hand having it one state would only give it 2 senators and a bunch of house members.  This would not be fair to the Mexican people.  So I am sure if enough people on both sides wanted this to happen we could find a diplomatic solution to how many states Mexico should be divided into.

Thank you for reading and please let me know what you think, or if you have any suggestions or input into the idea.

I think you have to be careful when making hubs like this. It can offend. That being said, your approach I think wasn't intended to be hawkish or offensive. Just posing the question right?

One thing I would say, is that I'm not sure it would help the US or Mexico much. Both countries would suffer. There would be a lot of problems to sort out, and the whole thing would take years and probably be a huge financial burden to the US. The US would be forced to bankrupt itself even more to fix all the infrastructure and fight the drug wars in mexico.

On top of this the economic impact would be huge.

Just look at Germany. East and west Germany still have numerous problems they are working out including a still uneven distribution of wealth. After they were united again at the end of the cold war, they both hit a massive economic meltdown as well.

Also I'm sure there would be a lot of Mexicans who wouldn't be to happy with the situation.

Sparhawke 24 months ago

I agree with Vaguesan, the way you write it makes it unclear whether you believe that Mexico will simply be a source of cheap labour and more oil to feed American greed or whether it will be actually beneficial for both parties.

If something like this does come to pass, then who exactly will be running Mexico and why should they have the right to simply swallow up another states sovereign land?

John B Badd profile image

John B Badd Hub Author 24 months ago

Sparhawke I believe in equal rights for all people of this planet. The people of Mexico would have the same minimum wage as the people in the United States so cheap labor is not really an issue. The Mexicans currently fill industrial jobs that America has outsourced because someone here decided it would be cheaper to outsource them and then claim we would not do them. I was trying to list benefits to both countries - if Mexico was annexed into the United States the industrial jobs that we lost would be back. Our industrial standards would raise the quality of life for the people of Mexico and they would end up with better education, (and I know our education system needs an overhaul also, I would have put that over health care but I am not in charge ;), higher wages, and better quality of life. The truth of the matter is the Mexican people would benefit form this and the entire Nation would benefit.

The oil is just a selling point and short term bonus and it is very important that all Americans and Mexicans realize we have to utilize alternate energy sources soon or we are all going to go bankrupt.

As far as who would be running Mexico: if Mexico entered the Union as the 31 states it currently is the United States would then consist of 81 states. Each of the Mexican states would get 2 senators and house reps equal to their population (about 1/3 of what is in the US now). So they would defiantly have a definitive voice in American politics. If Mexico entered as one state they would have the same number of house reps but only 2 senators; I do not see this as a fair option. Nobody's sovereign land would be swallowed up. All parties would have to agree that this is the best course of action and as far as I know neither government is discussing this. But maybe they should?

Thank you both for your feedback.

Watcha John,

:-)

Well that's the sillyness out of the way.

I don't think it will work, probably turn into the debacle that is the EU. Learn the lesson from Europe, for centuries, probably even millennia, the mainland European countries have been at loggerheads with the British Isles, and then we stupidly joined with them and gave away our sovereignty.

Ever since its inception, the USA has been at loggerheads with Mexico, There are going to be an awful lot of Mexicans who don't want a union, don't want to give up their sovereignty, even if the government of the day wins any referendum for union, with two countries that seem to have a predilection for conflict with each other, there will be trouble.

Mick

John B Badd profile image

John B Badd Hub Author 24 months ago

Mick I did some research to make sure I did not miss anything big and I cannot find anywhere that mainland European nations have given over their sovereignty to the British Isles. I see that the EU has some political fiasco with no true leader so that may be the cause of the issues. Too may chiefs not enough followers as we say here (ya I changed it a little but the jist is the same). The only other thing the EU has done is effected a free trade agreement (we have one called NAFTA and it bit us too) and a standardized monetary unit (that was probably not a good idea).

There is always a potential for conflict but in the end the will of the people shall prevail. Unless we let the will of the banks and corporations prevail then shame on us all.

(If a New World Order is really in the works I hope it is a democratic republic, if not we may need unification with Mexico and Canada to defeat it. I would rather have one planet under God and constitution than one planet under Bilderberg)

No Wonder Hugo Chavez Calls the USA Imperialist? I guess people better listen to Hugo Chavez and bring in the Russians and Chinese to protect Latin America

MickS profile image

MickS 24 months ago

Watcha John,

I never suggested the European nations gave up their sovereignty to Britain, Britain, stupidly joined and gave up our sovereignty to the EU. If you believe that the EU has simply set up a free trade agreement, you are totally wrong, the EU persistently passes legislation that undermines, sometimes reverses, individual country's laws, mainly English law. To be honest, I've given up trying to remember them, but I read about and listen about, and watch about them in the media.

I believe a couple or three or so years ago, Canada, or was it just British Colombia, can't remember and can't be bothered to look it up, had a referendum about joining the USA and said no, I think that Mexico will give the same answer. Of course, encouraging Mexico to join will have the same effect as the EU encouraging the poorer nations to join, flood the wealthier nations with cheap labour, destroy what little power the working man has, create a bigger labour pool, and force down wages and standard of living.

Forget about the Babylonians, the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Romans, et al, think about modern history, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, British, Russian. As Mr Spock said to Jim, 'Empires always fall, captain.' :-) What you are suggesting is for the USA to become Imperialistic, throughout the whole of mankind's history, great nations have tried it and found that, it doesn't work, different cultures don't want to be joined with other cultures, they want to make their own laws, work out their own destinies, not be pawns of some remote government.

John B Badd profile image

John B Badd Hub Author 24 months ago

I have to admit Mick I don’t know enough about the European Union; I will be sure to expand my knowledge before writing any hubs about it. All empires fall, all nations crumble, all planets fall into their sun, all suns go nova, it is the cycle of life. But we have to be the best we can be while we exist.

As far as imperialistic goes I have to determine what definition of the term you have in mind. For the sake of argument let's go to my trusty friend Webster's Dictionary.

Imperial:

1 of an empire. - not enough info on this one

2 of a country having control or sovereign rights over other countries or colonies: as the idea of Mexico joining the United States includes them as part of the country it self and not a subject of the country I do not think this is fitting

3 of having the rank of, and emperor or empress - defiantly not this one

4 having supreme authority; sovereign. - no the United States has no supreme athority, the people of the U.S. have choice (be it few choices but we will work on that in the future)

5 majestic; august; magnificent - we try to be

6 of great size or superior quality - we are of great size but we are far from superior, although we should strive to better ourselves

I think you were referring to numbers 2, 3 and 4, correct me if I am wrong. But having been an American for my entire life I assure you we do not fit this bill. And since I wrote this hub I can assure this is not what I want us to be. I don’t want the government to be in control, I want the people to be in control. All people from every nation from sea to shining sea. That is America and it is beautiful.

Watcha John,

I reckon that we're going to see a near future novel where Mexico and Canada link up with the USA, dystopian I think, perhaps akin to William Gibson, Neuromancer? :-)

I had written a longer piece, querying, the reliance of the dictionary definition of imperialism given the use of the term for the USSR, but it suddenly packed its bags and flew south, and I can't be bothered to rewrite it.

MickS, it is not a far fetched idea although I do not see it happening in the near future.

Words are fluid inventions thier meaning, although widely defined, is more often than not related to the context in which they are used and the perception of how they are being used as the intent of the author can not always be known. Of course here with interactive comments it can :)

MickS 23 months ago

Watcha John

I wasn't suggesting it was a far fetched idea, like the EU, which is for business men wanting to flood the work force with cheap labour, it is an excellent idea.

I was thinking more on the lines of you preparing work for a near future SF novel, think of, Brave New World, 1984, Neuromancer, although BNW was set in the far future. Speculating future events is an excellent way to form novels/stories. What is the push factor for merge then the aftermath, the fiction has to be much more interesting than the possible 'real' result.

I do have a sci-fi fantasy in the works, but it is set 200 years in the future and most sovereign nations as we know them no longer exist. The science fiction aspect of my story is possible I guess but the fantasy is, well, fantasy :)

I would like to see Americas ideology spread around the globe, but without the corrupt poisons that plague its fragile veins. If we were all true to our ideals and our politicians were true to their convictions then I would want Mexico to join the United States. But as the world stands right now, ran by power mongers whose twin gods are Greed and Lies, it would probably not help them. I do think things will get better, but if I didn't I would have succumbed to the opinions and then the actions of the ones I oppose.

I applaud you for your remarkable diligence in information gathering. Your article is impressive. I do see the upside of such an idea. With American ingenuity, the natural resources of Mexico could be a boon. I do see two massive problems: the language and the politics. I do not see a nation with two languages as being a good idea for unity. And nations are about unity. I don't see either wanting to give up their language. Secondly, who this would benefit most of all parties concerned would the American Liberal Democratic Party. Most Mexicans have little to nothing to conserve but would be very interested in American entitlement programs. I'd say this move would be the end to conservatism of any decent scale in America.

I just wanted to come back and say congrats on this hub. It really started some serious debate. :)

John B Badd profile image

John B Badd Hub Author 23 months ago

Thank you for your input James. I have pondered the language issue myself. The only way I can see it working is in a similar fashion to Canada's people who speak both French and English. I do believe the Mexican people have way more to offer the United States than welfare recipients. I do not even think entitlement programs benefit the Democratic Party very much. Most Democrats I know do not like the government giving away their tax money any more than you or I.

It is a little known fact that more than 90% of people never move more than 20 miles from the town they were born in. As a single nation the Mexican people would have the chance to better their communities under their state and federal laws. My hope would be that we could weed out the corruption that exist in the Mexican states and help better our nation as a whole. I understand where you are coming from though. I have my doubts as to weather or not this could truly work.

Vaguesan thank you for following this hub. I think it is an important option that needs to be addressed. My only regret is that I have not heard from many Mexicans who support or oppose the concept. I would like to hear their reasons for either. So if they are watching I urge them to respond.

This was a very interesting and provocative hub. I agree that there are many symmetries that a union of these 2 countries could bring to the table. Several areas where there could be a give and take and help to improve both. I'm all for the coming together of all countries of the world to help to improve all. But at this time, there is no one who would even consider this. The political climate is so poisonous here. Common sense immigration reform cannot even be passed under a Republican administration. The Mexicans would never trust a perceived colonial U.S. I applaud you for bringing up the idea and illustrating the pros and cons. I would love to see it someday but I will not hold my breath. Maybe our grandchildren will. Keep tilting at windmills. You never know.

But if US is to gain land, natural resources and a younger population, maybe a better source for all this would be Canada (English speaking for most part and with a better education system than both US and Mexico).

If you ever write a hub about US-Canada please let me know

Hi YAFI, I would like to see the United States and Canada unite, and although I think it would benefit both countries I do not think Canada would go for it at this time. Despite their economic hardships NAFTA has greatly benefited Canada and they like being sovereign from US conflicts abroad. I will however look into the idea.

I think it is more likely with Mexico because of all their hardships. They could only improve by such a union.

Kane 21 months ago

I have been for an idea such as this for a long time, both Mexico and Canada. My reasons for wanting such an endeavor to take place, are for increased security for the people. Although it would mean more land that has to be defended, the increase in resources and population from such a union would out weigh the border increase that would have to be patrolled and defended. This added security may also help deter unprovoked conflict against the new union. I also see this an added "Pro" for the Mexican people, in the sense that the U.S. Military would now be responsible to defend them just as vigorously as they would for themselves.

I would also be really interested to hear your viewpoints on an American-Canadian union as well. Perhaps done as a separate hub. Would you mind if I post a copy of your hub on the subject at my site to see what comments and viewpoints my members may have on the subject?

Kane thank you for reading. You can post a copy of this article to your site as long as you give me credit and provide a link to this article for anyone wanting to comment here.

I think a union with Mexico, Canada and the United States could benefit all three nations. I am not entirely sure if I am for a union between any of them; it put this out as a possible option. I think it would cause fifty years of strife before we would begin to see the benefits of such a union. At this volatile time in our technological infancy the strain may prove to great and cause a further break.

I think it would be best if this union was formed during a time of financial stability when all could benefit, and when we had the troop levels available at home to deal with any dissidents.

Hi, i am mexican, i live in guadalajara jalisco mexico. the true is this, almost all the new generation of mexican, want to live in the usa, 'cause here in mexico, it is not easy to move foward. I am engineer of software, and i said that 'cause i try to keep informed in all the things in the world and and to get more knowledge about everything. As you know here in mexico we celebrate the 200 anniversary of the mexican revolution but, we are not proud of 'cause we live in a third world, so the mexican revolution did not work well.

I want to in mexico, 'cause i like to follow the rules, to be a good citizen, and to do things well, but here in mexico, it doesnt matter if you do it well some time maybe.

I think that the idea of join two countries, its great, but you will never see that, why? 'Cause the goverment of mexico never will let that, they dont wanto to lose their power of do whatever they want to do, they expend our money, and they live like kings, and they dont care about the mexican, it sad but true.

I've been studing American history, and i have to say, that i would like to be an american, i am proud of george washington did, he is one of the greatest leader that i have known, he fought for freedom and he did not want to things before his country, he refused the payment that goverment wanted for him, buy accepted 'cause he didnt a problem and he did not want to be relected for third time, thats a great man, in mexico porfirio diaz keeped 30 years as a president and he wanted to be relected again, it stated the revolution.

i am not proud to say this, but i would like to be an american, 'cause i want to do things rigth, i am always triying to be a better people, to study more, and when a look aroun me, a lot of people just care drink, girls, but then dont want to Striving more for do better thing, and if you want to do ti, the goverment does not help you. My friend your idea its great, you but never see that, until you killed all the governing of mexico. I hope some day a could live in mexico, but not in the zone where mexican-american lives, because is almost the same of here cholos but the have the oportunity to get money and and guns. I tell you one thing, i will prefer that usa would conquered all mexico, so it would've been a excelent country.

One thing more, the reason 'cause some mexican dont like you is because some americans think we are idiot, or we live in chozas or we use donkey, if you ever come to guadalajara you will see what i mean, is a normal city ok.

Well i think american is a great country, your history is great, george washington beat to the world's largest army at that time in that time, so that great. You are so lucky. I hope some day be part of that great country.

Luis Adrian thank you for your honesty and I am glad to here you would like to join the United States. I do not think this would have to be done through violent means. I also think you and your people can change your country for the better if you embrace change and work in an honorable fashion for what you desire.

I have met many Mexicans and I know that they were good and honorable people. Just like in the US a few bad seeds can make everyone seem like a villain. Do not let our nation fool you there is much corruption in our government as well. But when we prove corruption we remove our politicians.

You must make your politicians work for you and not have it the other way around. "We the People" is the most powerful ally you can have.

luis adrian 18 months ago

the problem here is that we prove corruption but they have something called "amparo" that makes that the politician can't go to jail. It is a stupid thing to protect themselves of the laws in mexico. It is so sad how the scape, o man, we say something like "in mexico everything is possible" we mean with money you can do everything we mean corruption.

You now what is the real problem, since mexico has created we made all in a bad way, all the person who have the power, does not care about mexico, just itself, thats the real problem, we dont care mexico we care ourselves, we are not united like you are, and may be you dont know but a lot of people is racist, yeah it's true, 'cause the color of skin, why do you think revolution was about?, the "indian people" did not have rights only the "white people", may be you did not know but in some job they prefer more people with white skin. o man you will surprise, and other thing, do you know how are the most racists in the USA? Mexico-american, incredible but it is true. I always be a mexico, but a want to live in the usa, i am not shame where i came from, but i shame for the government of my country, in these last years the violence has been increased a lot, we have stared to be afraid in some cities, for example we never visit "ciudad juares" never, and also we dont like to travel to Mexico city, that city is completed fucked, the people who travel to there from guadalajara to mexico city when thery arrived there, they dont wanto go out alone.

We have our change to change mexico, it was the revolution,

but we we missed it.

I know that in mexico we have an excellent persons but it is not easy released your dream or develop what you are able to do.

Any way, i am glad what you thing about join countries, and for me it would be so great but i dont think that mexico i mean the fucking goverment acepts and that mexico change for good, i hope some day i will remerber this moments but living in the usa, theres just one thing more, i love my country, but the goverment sucks, i would like to live here and know that mexico will be better some day, it will not happen. That the reason whey an excellent and brilliant people want to move there, and the poor people that did not study, you konw what it is, 'cause they have two optios, or work to survive or study, thats cruel but true.

he have a lot of land, people, climates, oil, o man, i am so disappointed of my goverment, not of my country.

Hi Luis,

I do not mind your questions; in fact I welcome them. I care about the whole human race and because Mexico is full of humans they are worth caring about. I chose to write about Mexico because I am a proud American and Mexico is not only our closest neighbor to the south, but they are also a danger to their own people as well as the citizens of the United States.

I consider myself to be a realist, and although I would like the world to be a peaceful and harmonious place where everyone gets along I know it is full of selfish and ignorant people who would willingly sacrifice the many for there own personal gains. I know that power corrupts and because of this any political system is subject to corruption. I know that the government has to be for the people - the people have to have the ability to choose their government as well as the free flow of information and the ability to freely express themselves so that the best representatives can be chosen. Without all of these freedoms you can not have a healthy society.

Mexico is wrought with the same internal corruption that destroyed the Soviet Union and to this day still infects not only Russia and Eastern Europe but the entire globe. I call this an infection because this form of corruption truly is an illness; it is in fact a cancer that eats away at justice and democracy and if it is not controlled it has the potential to corrupt the entire world.

I am not judging Mexico or Russia or Afghanistan or any of the other countries where criminals own the law makers. I know that this exist inside my own United States as well as most nations in the world. It is just more rampant or maybe just more pronounced in certain countries. I know that we need just individuals to run our countries so we can live the best possible lives and not be servants to tyrannical rulers.

So to answer your question as to why I care about Mexico, I care because your people are humans just like my people, and humans are my people. I speak out about Mexico because they are my neighbor and the corruption there is a danger to all of humanity. Political corruption must be sought out and destroyed not only in your and my countries but in the entire world. Thank you I really enjoyed reading all of this.

Just an idea.

Perhaps a new CSA or confederate states of America is more practical with this unification at first. One currency, one military, two federal governemnts, one trade policey, free movement of people except employement, One FBI/ Marshals/ DEA.

But two seperate states for laws and legal employement. With Social security checks law, for all employement. This way we don't have to worry about changing things like our laws "drinking age, guns, etc" and also 200 mexicans applying for a janitors job in Nebraska. We dont want the red states to spit from th union.

The central bank, trade and Military would be controled out of Washington DC. It would be the only way.

Should we expect you to suggest the French annex Spain, Switzerland or Italy next? Might as well unify the entire American continent to create one sole country! ¬¬

That would just be silly Mariana. It would make much more sense for Switzerland to annex France than the other way around. You really need to think before you put things in print :P.

Yes, it will benefit both countries. There are two models the EU and USA. The EU model might work with current situation because of the language barrier. The NAFTA is very good start as well as illegal and legal migration to the USA. As of July 2009, Mexican Americans make up 10.3% of the United States' population with over 31,689,000 Americans listed as of Mexican ancestry. The current speed of the integration will assure that it will happen in mater of time: 50, 100, or 200 years with this discussion or not. I would propose open discussion to make the transition as smooth as possible. Fighting the integration will only postpone the unavoidable and cost unnecessary useless expenses such as customs agents, border control, law enforcement, etc. Opening business in Mexico could be very attractive idea with cheap labor costs if the US laws are implement in Mexico such as protection of property, reasonable courts, use of USD, etc.

I really appreciate your honesty about Mexico. I am currently living in Mexico near the San Diego border because my partner who I have two young children with, was deported twice in 6 months and we are working on getting legally married and going back to live in the US where we belong. My boyfriend lived in the US since he was 16 yrs old and I have known him for almost 30 years. He should have fixed his paperwork during amnesty, but before 9/11 it really wasn't that big of an issue to be illegal and to live in California. Now things have really changed. My two little kids, three and five years old are the ones who really were negatively affected by having their father suddenly taken away from them and then having to uproot their lives and move to Mexico so they could be raised by two parents - and believe me, kids do need both parents if at all possibl

Laura thank you for reading my article. As you can see I do not have all the answers. In fact I have more questions today than I did when I wrote this article.

I hope the United States and Mexico can resolve there issues in a manner that is beneficial for everyone involved.

I wish the best of luck to you and your family.

We have Mexicans all over the US already, and they enjoy to travel back and forth between the two countries. Lets make it just one Country, and add Mexico as a state.

I think it is a great idea to annex Mexico I have looked into it before and I actually came up with an answer to the state issue if you take an average land area approach you get the US with a land area of 3,794,101 sq miles and 50 states equals an average of 75,882.02 sq miles per state. (I know not all states are that that size it’s an average) then you have Mexico with a total size of 761,606 sq miles which divided by 75,882.02 sq miles equals 10 states. So that would give the New Mexican states adequate representation.

Also it was about 3 days ago I looked into this very possibility. I looked into the unification of US and Mexico and the unification of the US and all of Central America. As you have said in the responses too many people on here there would be a long painful process to completely integrate the nations; however I believe it would be in the long run a great thing for the children of both countries. As for the guy who was talking about the language part. Neither the United States nor Mexico has an official language however the majority do speak different languages within the United States most of the younger generation are learning Spanish. I don’t see it as being too much of an inconvenience to change the United States school system to make it mandatory to learn both languages. In Mexico the entire school system will have to be restructured so adding English in to the restructuring would just be a small portion of it. The Large corporations that have left the United States to move to the cheaper workforce and lighter environmental sanctions of Mexico I’m sure will not approve of the merging of the 2 countries. Company’s moved to Mexico because it was too expensive for them to make their plants pass EPA regulations and paying their employees. I’m sure they will try to work with the corrupt Mexican government to stop the unification. As for the infrastructure of the country the entire country would need to be redesigned, but so does ours so maybe they could just be incorporated and the infrastructure of both could be fixed together. The most pressing issue in my mind would be the drug cartels and the Mexican mafia. The United States military would be at constant war within its own border for years trying to clear the slime ball drug dealers and psycho gangsters out of Mexico. Unlike the normal gangs in the United States the drug cartels and Mexican mafia do not just kill a person here and there or a drive by in their own neighborhoods the Mexican’s kill 10-20 people a shot and take people hostage. It would be like bringing the troops out of Afghanistan and saying now do it all over again here. I do believe that it can be done and within 50 years you wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference between the 2. If it is done it will probably benefit the Mexican people much more the people of the United States.

What an interesting concept you've presented. Most of us have read or know something about the concept of a one world government -- and although it's a gradual process the acceptance of that idea actually seems to be under consideration by some as reflected by the comments to your Hub. Having traveled in Mexico in the past (I visit friends there) I'm aware of the great burden of the Mexican people as to their government.I can't help but wonder, knowing the condition of our government at this time and the consequent discouragement of U.S. citiens, if the joining together of two unhappy and disillusioned nations would be advantageous to either? Common sense tells me it would not benefit either Mexico or the United States. There are some U.S. citizens that believe Mexico has already started colonizing in the U.S. I don't claim to have any answers to the situation but definitely found your information interesting. Excellent and well written Hub and definitely voted up. Best, Sis

Insaneinnixa thank you for reading.

I think this could be accomplished as well but it would take the support and cooperation of both nations. I do not know if that could happen.

Angela Blair thank you for reading and I am glad you enjoyed this hub.

I do not know if it would be a good idea either. I do think it could benefit both nations but it would take strong leadership to make it work. I am not sure if we have had that strong of leadership in my lifetime.

As for as a one world government goes the idea scares me. If it has to happen though then I want that government to be the United States.
