Inception and Lucid Dreaming: Truth Behind the Movie

Inception
Christopher Nolan (Director of Batman Dark Night)'s movie Inception promises to be one of this summers greatest works. This science fiction fantasy brings to life a world were dreams and reality intertwine, delivering a truly original story that is drawing praise from both critics and audiences alike. Along with a unique plot this movie delivers Oscar worthy performances from its cast which includes Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic) and Ellen Page (Juno). Inception rounds itself off with stunning special effects and epic action scenes that compliment the inspirational acting and multi-layered plot. Inception is the story of rogue agents that use a device developed by the military to consciously enter into the dreams of their targets in order to steal information for their clients. The team is lead by Cobb (DiCaprio) who has been jaded by the resent separation from his family who continue to haunt his dreams.

Dreams in Movies
Inception is unique because it deals with the world of dreams on the silver screen in new and innovative ways; in it dreams are something more that just the subconscious ramblings of the sleeping mind. However, unlike its predecessors such as Dreamscape (1984) or The Nightmare on Elm Street series, which added a level of mysticism and fantasy to the dream realm, Inception deals with dreams in a scientific way. The dreamers are connected to a machine that links them all into the dreams of one individual. Once inside the dream world it is explained that everyone who is not connected from the real world is the subconscious manifestation of the dreamers themselves. Just like in real dreams the dreamer can become aware of the fact that they are dreaming - this phenomenal is known as lucid dreaming. It is also possible for one to forget they are dreaming and get lost in the dream. Time itself operates at different speeds while dreaming. Most of these phenomena have some grounding in the reality of dreams as we all experience them. Let's explore the difference between the facts and fictions of the dream world.
Mutual Dreaming
The most notable aspect of the lucid dreams in Inception is the ability of more than one person to coexist in a mutual dream. Throughout history and myth there have been reports of people sharing dreams. In Robert Jordan's fantasy series The Wheel of Time the dream world is known as Tel'aran'rhiodand the characters can coexist in this world at the same time. Their have been many movies where the stars meet in dreams for various purposes, be it intentional or not. Neil Gaiman's award wining Sandman series brought the Dreaming to life in an epic story like none other. Australian aborigines believe in the Dreamtime which is their spirit world that exist parallel to the physical world; their shamans are able to travel in the Dreamtime for knowledge and healing. Despite the above works and beliefs in mutual dreaming, I am aware of no real scientific data that would support the possibility of mutual dreaming. Their have been studies however which state that instances of dream telepathy far exceed the odds of chance. One such case would be Dr. Montague Ullman and Dr. Stanley Krippner's study in the 1960's at MaimonidesHospital in Brooklyn; in this study a subject who was awake in another room attempted to send mental pictures of paintings to a subject who was in REM sleep. [From: Stephen LaBerge, (1985). LUCID DREAMING] When waking many subjects recounted dreams similar to that of the pictures being sent to them. If you couple the possibility of psychic links with the idea of an external device connecting two people together it may some day be possible to share dreams with the aid of science. As for now I would have to conclude that dreams are a subjective experience and mutual dreaming is beyond the capabilities of anyone without exceptional psychic abilities. And if these individuals exist there is no available scientific data to prove it.

Lucid Dreams
The second aspect of Inception I would like to address is a concept you may have experienced to some degree already - that is the ability to become consciously aware you are dreaming in your own dreams. This concept is known as lucid dreaming, and its practice is becoming more popular every day. For some of us this has only happened once or twice by accident and we usually wake up as soon as we realize we are dreaming. Others may never have had a lucid dream. But there are some individuals to whom the art of lucid dreaming has become a science. They study the methods of inducing lucid dreams and practice their skills while in the dream world. Once the dreamer becomes aware of they are dreaming they can control their dreams to a degree that surpasses that of the characters in Inception. Not only can a skilled lucid dreamer control the content of the dream but they can also control themselves as well. A lucid dreamer could very easily fly or grant themselves superhuman strength. The imagination may truly be the limit where lucid dreaming is concerned.
The Subconscious
There are several other aspects of Inception I would like to discuss here. The extras in the dreams were referred to as subconscious manifestations of the psyche. Given that our dreams occur in our own heads and are subjective to us I would have to say this is an accurate description of the people we encounter in our dreams. It is common to meet someone you know in a dream yet they do not look like the person you know them to be. In a standard dream we do not even realize this is happening until we wake. In a lucid dream this is less likely to happen. It has also been reported by many lucid dreamers that they meet people in their dreams claiming to be guides who teach them if they want their help. This is very similar to my experiences with core shamanism, and I think the shamanic state and the dream world may be tied very close together as the aborigine's Dreamtime suggest.
Subjective Time
In the movie time slowed greatly for the dreamer. As they traveled deeper into the dream world time slowed even more. Now I think this was great for the movie and it made for some truly awesome choreographed scenes. But in the real world the time disparities are not that great. I know in the usual unconscious dreaming time is completely whacked out. The time between me hitting my snooze button and it going off again can seem like seconds or hours depending on the circumstance. But studies in lucid dreams have shown that time differences while consciously dreaming are minimal to non existent.
Dr. Stephen LaBerge
The history of lucid dreaming most likely dates back to the days the first humans dreamed. But it was not known as lucid dreaming until the phrase was coined by psychiatrist Fredrik van Eeden who began recording his own dreams and classifying them by type in 1896. Little contribution was made to this science however until Dr. Stephen LaBerge began writing his theses on the subject for his PH.D. at StanfordUniversity in the 1980's. Dr. LaBerge is the leading lucid dream researcher in the world. He founded The Lucidity Institute which promotes dream research and trains people on how to achieve these dreams. I have read some of his works on the subject and found them to be very enlightening. When he sees Inception I hope he enjoys it as much as I did.

I'm always amazed at what you come up with Mr. Badd.
This is a great hub. thumbs up.
I am so glad to see this hub. I've been a lucid dreamer for as long as I can remember. Naturally, dreams and lucid dreams have been a longtime interest of mine. Couple that with the fact that I like Chris Nolan movies, and I was bound to enjoy Inception.
However, I'd like to say that Inception isn't a "unique" film in dealing with lucid dreams and shared dreams: Paprika and Waking Life are two movies I can think of that deal with these subjects as well. Inception is nonetheless a good movie in its own right.
I've linked to this hub from my own hub review of the movie, where I talk about lucid dreams a bit too.
Cheers!
Waking Life is a great movie. Can't wait to see Inception.
Ok, so I finally got to see this movie. It was awesome. Totally lived up to the hype. So I had to come back and reread this hub again. It's even better now that I've seen the movie.
I just saw the movie and it was awesome. I loved your article
great movie. loved the idea and the cast. this article reminds me of what NPR was saying about dreams and movies. very informative!
Inception was a great movie.
Incredible movie, great hub! Thanks for all this info.
Cool article, didn't see the movie yet. So I'm very curious about it. I'm a lucid dreamer myself. The first time I read about it was through the books of Carlos Castaneda. Ever heard of him? You don't mention his book "the art of dreaming" Well from that book I learned everything I know. I find lucid dreaming a very natural way of dreaming and I like to encourage people to learn it as well. Everybody can learn it.
I've also wrote a Hub about dreaming. http://hubpages.com/hub/Dreaming-The-Door-to-your- check it, maybe you like it. thanks and vote-up:)
leo was good as always, not nearly as original as touted, waking life is better
I have to see this movie! Lucid dreaming is fun! :D
LEEoOoooo...........!
sorry, where was i? oh yes...this looks like an amazing film. my son has seen it twice and wants me to go see it.
i have been a lucid dreamer all my life but never knew that is what it was. fascinating.
nightmare on elm street scared me, especially those little kids playing jumprope and being all sing-songy (shudder)
rating UP.
Inception is the most amazing movie of 2010 on my opinion. A film by C. Nolan and along side with L. DiCaprio. Just Fan-Tas-Tic!
Thumbs up to the movie, and another for your splendid hub regarding my favorite Nolan film. Very well done Mr. Badd. :)
Inception was a really moving film for me. I saw it three times in two weeks, and the only reason I didn't see it again and again was because the cinema restricted the times to past 6pm, and nobody would let me!
But truly, it was the best film I have ever seen. It made me cry. I've been a lucid dreamer for a month now, and I've had eight lucid dreams, which is great. But it wasn't all that easy! I had to try and try again for FOUR months until I had my first lucid dream, and now they just keep coming. Again and again. They're fantastic. I really love them and they've had a huge influence on my waking life. Plus I am now very creative too, as I am inspired by past dreams. My dream diary is in e-form, but I read it and I'm greatful for being one of the few who is an experienced lucid dreamer.
I am yet to watch the movie (Inception) but hopefully, I will do that soon. Great hub...
excellent hub. I especially like the connections you made with shamanic techniques as well as Ullman and Krippner's research from the 1970s. I enjoyed the movie but was surprised that no one ever flew!
cool and good read, i need to rewatch inception, i was distracted when i saw it. i'm getting more passaonaite about lucid dream for i mediate every night.
Just found this blog using Google. Inception though a very entertaining movie has nothing to do with lucid dreaming. It's characters use drugs to induce a highly unlikely dream state. As you have read Castanadas recall that drugs are a crutch akin to training wheels on bicycles. In fact anytime I've been in the hostpital under anesthesia I was in a coma not a dream state. So Inception is typical Hollywood with no basis in reality which is always immensely more interesting. Wired magazine had an extensive interview with Chris Nolan and he never once brought up the subject of lucid dreaming.
I had my first lucid dream after reading Castanadas 25 years ago. Indeed holding up my hand did and looking at it immediatly woke me up in the dream. The amazing aspect of these dreams is I clearly remember each one of them even the first one. Lucid dreaming is nothing like tripping out on a drug and that is where Inception becomes just an action movie.
I will watch it when in comes on DVD. Thanks.
Watched it for the first time, rented out the DVD, a few days ago. Loved it. Thanks for all the information on lucid dreaming. Very interesting article, and well presented.
I'm a lucid dreamer, i used to be able to do it when I was a kid really efficiently. I am trying to master the art of dream walking ( entering someone elses dream). I first need someone to willfully let me into it, but first i must achieve lucidity which sometimes isnt that hard. If it works i will get back to this site and i will post a link to my discoverys
Very interesting hub. When I was a teenager, I could lucid dream all the time. I've been terribly addicted to caffeine for years and don't sleep very well as a result. There are still times when it happens, but usually only when someone "wakes me up." I can be sleeping and thinking about the content of my dream, while, at the same time, I'll be carrying on a conversation with the person who woke me up. The conversation, however, is usually ONLY related to the content of my dream. When the person tells me they don't know what the heck I'm talking about, I get extremely angry. Example:
When I was like 8 or 9 years old, my mom slept in my bed with me because I was scared or something. She woke abruptly in the night to see me standing in front of my closet with my arms stretched out in front of me.
Mom: What are you doing?
Me: I'm in line! (I acted like: duh!)
Mom: In line for what?
Me: (Very angrily... in a no sh*t Sherlock type of way) In line for LUNCH!
John- great hub. I watched the movie and I had to rewatch it over the course of 3 nights. It had so much information and I found it hard to follow. Once I understood their basic concepts, I was able to fully follow the movie. Reading your hub before watching it would have certainly helped.
So I am curious, what did you think of their concept of "limbo" that very deep space within the unconscious that leaves most people crazy upon return? I would love to also ask you about the ending but I don't want to ruin it for those who have not seen the movie yet!

Very interesting look at a movie I certainly hope to see. Dreams are fascinating to me, and have played an odd element in my life on several occasions. I wrote a hub about a dream wherein a young boy told me he would have a truth for me whenever I saw him in my dreams--if I didn't see him, it would be up to me to learn who in my dreams held the truths that could be mine.
Over 30 years ago I had a dream that seemed a continuation of someone else's--I hope to write about that but have not yet done so. I had a dream where I removed aspects of my character as if they were clothing or another skin. I had a series of dreams as a teen where I was battling an unknown enemy and we both possessed more-than-human abilities. In other words, dreams have played a large role in my life.
I thoroughly intend to see this movie and have, in fact, been looking forward to it for some time. Thanks for your review and insights.
